If there’s one thing I know, it’s that…

I am going to drastically underestimate how much time it will take me to break down wood boards into something usable for a specific project. Now I’ve had these 12″ wide, by 1″ thick by 8′ long pine boards since the spring of 2020, at the height of our flatten the curve, stay home whenever possible portion of the current dark time line. I had intended this wood purchase for making larger Harry Potter trunks, but after making four of them, plus a few tool boxes, trays, drawers and such it fell off my radar. Now I need a single bed for my youngest child at the cottage, I think now is as good a time as any to try to make some plain, but classy simple furniture.

Which brings us back to my original statement. Just how long it took me to break down three 12x1x8ft pine boards into the needed pieces on my improvised cut list. After all is said and done (assume all lengths as 8ft long and 1 inch thick here, I don’t want to have to repeat that part over, and over again) I have four outside members at 5.75″ wide, and three that are 3.75″ wide. I have not planed them as of yet, nor jointed them. I feel like I want to do these with a hand planer, and a card scraper. So smooth, but not an 800 grit buttery smoothness. Had I of chosen to use Cherry or Walnut I think I would go to those kinds of lengths when finishing. But here, hand plane or card scraper smooth will be just fine. I’ll round over the edges with a router, as I don’t own any type of hand jig shaper to do profiles and things of that nature. I’ll get to my point, as I digress.

Just a few simple measurements and a handful of cuts took me 73 minutes. *Face palm*. Yeah – I was not rushing in the slightest. I’m not sure I could have gone any slower though. Setting up the fence, double and triple checking my measurements. Getting my roller stand to help me keep the 8ft long 12″ wide boards horizontal with the cutting plane was awkward. Helpful due to the weight, but cumbersome. My featherboard only worked on cuts below 10 inches. I knocked things over, and banged the fence a bunch, so I had to stop and reset. Glad I don’t charge by the hour for this hobby of mine.

My main concern is doing a three prong box joint for my main bed frame. Some legs with pegs to keep them in place. And some hand cut channels to drop in six (or so) cross braces or slates, so that the mattress or box spring can’t fall through the center. If I get a bit overzealous I can give one end a headboard to stop pillows from falling off. In accordance to the room it’s going into, one side and one end will be up against the walls, so I don’t have to go crazy. I want it to be sturdy. Have no sharp edges, and try to inset the legs to avoid stubbed toes. I want the legs to be tall enough I can get a vacuum head under the bed, but not so high the mattress feels like it’s up in the air. Little kids and falling onto hard floors won’t make me anyone’s favourite human. If I can keep my cuts flush and not full of open gaps I’ll be a happy camper.

I have lots of dark stain. Walnut, smokey green, ebony even. I’ll have to ask my kid if they want it to still look like wood when completed. I really just want to get her mattress up off the floor now that the day bed slash crib is going to a very pregnant cousin for continued use.

I’ll take numerous photos if I manage to get any further into this over the coming days. I know I have six large projects coming between now and Christmas, so if I work smart I should be able to do this without too much of a problem. If I get the legs sorted out, and the slates cut down, I can pick away at the main frame box joints and have it ready for late November or by Christmas at least. I make no promises.

Follow along as I shoddily remake other people’s famous designs like a hillbilly gone blind on moon shine. You like cupped boards, with twists and knots? Have I got the perfect project for you to follow. Adios muchachos.

Kelce: The Movie or whatever it was called.

Fantastic. Loved it. Both a very touching & rather moving intimate look at Jason Kelce’s superbowl quasi retirement year in review. It was an unexpected hit with me. My wife chose it off of Amazon Prime last night, and I didn’t know what to expect. It was really great. Travis makes a number of appearances but the main focus was Jason, his wife Kylie, their two (three) children, and his parents for good measure. You get to see him really wrestle with the choice of retirement. See both the ups and downs of the 2022 season. Witness the injuries, and see him hobble about during recovery periods. I thoroughly enjoyed it. You even get a backstage look at all the extra nonsense that goes into building the teams superbowl presence in the media, and for the event itself.

As soon as it started I was like “Didn’t this guy appear in an It’s always sunny in Philadelphia two parter when the Eagles played the Patriots”. To which my wife exclaimed “Yes!”. So turns out I kind of, sort of knew about Jason Kelce before watching his movie. Small world.

Welcome to Wednesday everybody. Ciao Bella!

We’ve got a nice little day planned. Going to Home Depot. Gonna grab some lunch. Might get over to Bed Bath & Beyond, but I don’t know if we’ll have enough time…

Sounded so wrong when I heard that as a teen, but that shit cuts DEEP as a married adult. By god! The authenticity is threatening me right now. I feel targeted. Brr. I feel a chill wind on the air coming in. I wouldn’t have blinked if I’d seen a single snowflake settle on the window just then. The bell tolls. The bell tolls for thee.

Here we are, Tuesday. Almost a full three quarters of the way through September. Last few Fair items are getting finalized, and then we will have those four glorious, and busy days to contend with. Then a week later we have Thanksgiving. Hopefully this year we can all avoid Covid so as not to ruin the holiday weekend. Lots to do in preparation for Halloween after the long weekend is done. Another Wonderland visit to try out the Halloween Haunt Spectacular. I don’t care for horror movies, so we will have to see how my eight year old deals with a spooky night time theme park. Could be fun. Could be a weeks worth of nightmares just waiting to happen. Fun!

I wonder if we will get decent weather for the fair this year? Last years weather was fantastic. Even the year before had sunshine and hardly any clouds. Our fair comes pretty late in the year so it isn’t out of the question for us to battle rain, flurries and even an early snow. The days where we get sun at the fair are the best. Dry fair grounds, cold treats, and lots of fun. Hope to see you there! Ciao Bella.

Shopping whilst hungry.

Had to do it even though I usually try to avoid it. I was out late with my eldest last night watching the new TMNT animated movie, so I was groggy this morning and didn’t eat before school drop off. Was good when shopping though. Didn’t fill my cart with snacks this time around. Was able to avoid the empty stomach rumble temptations of being drawn to all the things I would like to eat right this very second to fill my belly. Not good at avoiding falling into that trap. So many things look so delicious when hungry. The whole no windows, no clocks, tall encompassing shelves full of colours, and the smell from the deli counter, of cooked chicken and wedge potatoes. Mm. So good. Luckily I made it home without any really out of pocket purchases. I saw the new animated Across the Spider verse and picked that up, but otherwise no buyers remorse type missteps.

Covid has really put a damper on the free food kiosks they used to have showcasing new products. Freebies seem to be few & far between these days. Not too happy that they now have many of the self check out stations closed now too. But no people manning the old style check out line. So what’s going on there? Ridiculous.

Back to Monday – again. I need to add another sponsor logo onto the Markham Fair posters, and then, I believe (to the best of my recollection) that these posters are done. Just need board & sponsor approval and they can go to the printers for production. Have a snap frame 22×28″H poster to make of e everyone’s favourite version and then my commitments for this year are completed. Yeah!

I should probably check the kids rooms for laundry and run the washing machine.

Turtle power!

Finally have the chance to go see the new animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Mutant Mayhem to the rescue. Whee! I’ve been looking forward to this. One bonus from the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike is that movies have the chance to stick around a bit longer rather than washing out of the theaters after two weeks. A less crowded launch schedule means we can wait to find a suitable time to go to the movies. I’m pumped. We’ve watched the original feature film, plus Secret of the Ooze, with people in suits. Then the two CGI heavy versions with Megan Fox as April, and my kids were watching a more recent animated tv show on Netflix. So near total TMNT saturation has been hit, and we can go sit through a feature length film. Still up in the air as to whether the youngest will join us too. Not known for being able to sit still for two full hours. Either way I think we’ll get a kick out of this new version.

I have a sneaking suspicion that this very youthful version of the turtles is not geared to me, but to my eight year old, and I’m ok with that. I got to see the original when I was ten, and it is still – by far, my favourite version of the franchise. Although this art style, much like across the spider verse, really piques my interest. I like this new stylized animation that is coming out of Sony. We are also not going to see it in 3D, so that should also make it easier to watch. I think I’m the only one who enjoys that gimmick in my immediate family. My kids don’t wear sunglasses either, so it may just be an eyewear thing, and not the added depth of field that is giving them pause.

We have had a pretty glorious lazy Sunday morning so far. Even had a hot breakfast delivered. Very bougie, I know. But it was kinda fantastic. I would have made a hot breakfast but our bread has gone mouldy, and I can’t make bacon & egg sandwiches without any bread. Could have done bacon, eggs and beans, but we were looking toward sandwiches. Blinders on I guess.

I see that Angry Birds is on tv. Might take a brief moment to watch some of that. Red is about as far away from Ted Lasso as an actor can get. Lots of range in that Sudeikis fella. Ciao Bella!

Edit** Made one of the classic blunders by getting the show times wrong by pushing the date ahead in the app to see showtime’s, but not waiting for the shift to take effect, and then not double checking the next day. So we wasted an hour driving around to get to a non existent movie showing. Didn’t feel like waiting the three hours for the next actual show time. Came home and ate lunch instead. Going to try an evening show tonight, and this time we’ll do snacks and should get to see the movie! Fingers crossed.

Busy day at Wonderland.

It’s starting to look alot like fall, and along with that comes the Halloween Haunt! What a lovely sunny day. Stuck it out for four hours of fun, and called it a day. Life is good when you have seasons passes, no need to try and stay from open until close. We got in, rode what we could do quickly. Ate some late lunch, had a reassessment to find one last big ticket item, then came home via the scenic route. Fantastic. No melt downs. No tantrums. Man to man coverage, and we got just about everything out of our partial day at the park. I’m still hoping to ride Yukon Striker, Leviathan, and Behemoth this year if I can. But no harm done if I can’t.

I just took some time to pick away at a project that needed a few final fixes, and then I’ll rest my legs, have a cold beverage, and perhaps a nap. We certainly got all of our steps in wandering around all four corners of the park. Dressed for the chilly morning, and the 22°C sun soon caught up with me, and I was sweating! Yuck. Hence the need for a glass of water, and a comfy sit down.

Hope you all have a wonderful saturday too. Ciao Bella!

Decorations are up!

Hopping around all nimbly bimbly like a cat. Meow.

Did I say meow? Listen here meow, boy! What to say, another wonderful Friday is on the docket today. Shall we attempt another pass at the Strawberry patch this morning? Get it over and done with? Sure, why not. Both my back and my hamstrings were starting to feel better so why not go and aggravate them again. Atleast we will be able to put this patch to bed and not have to worry about it again until spring time. The water melons took a beating with all of the excess rain this year. I don’t see any of them getting over 12-15 pounds. In years previous we’ve had a 70+ pound beast to go to the fair with. Not this year. No sir. However, seems like a good year for apples. Several of the orchards I can see locally from the road are just bursting with fruit. Funny how that is.

Getting a little overzealous with these berries my good bitch!

Thought we could swing it in two days, but this patch absolutely requires a third visit to remove all of these gods be damned thistles and stinging nettles. Holy shit are there a lot of these little bastards. The straw bedding seems to bring all the prickles to the yard, huh. My gloves are only so good at keeping that nasty shit from getting embedded in my hands. Good rule of thumb for pulling thorny stuff is to grab it as close to the ground where there are fewer stingy bits, and pull it out with the roots attached. After a rainfall is best. Ground is pliable. Still sting you though, so not foolproof by any means. Cover your arms in sleeves too. That itchy shit will get you, and ruin your morning. Going to need to steel myself to go back for a third time to finish the job. There’s just so many in such a small patch left to go. Ugh. My Crocs aren’t so good at keeping those thorns from jabbing my feet either. Handy for quick clean up, but offer little to no protection at all. Full boots seem like a bit much for this job.

Why is getting up in the morning so hard.

I am starting to understand why so many people have leaned on coffee in order to wake up and get out of bed in the mornings. I’ve always tried to do it by getting enough sleep. But quantity does not equal quality, as far as sleep is concerned. So if I’m not going to use coffee or tea, nor any sort of stimulant, then I need to get a higher quality of restful sleep at night so that I don’t wake up feeling cloudy headed, or miserable. No pressure. Just sleep better. Right? Ha ha. Not so easy when you think about it. But I digress. No sleep studies or months of research going on here today. Just know that what coffee & tea do to my insides is enough to swear off either for a life time of groggy mornings. Could my poor sleep be from my mattress, air quality, temperature of the room, my intestinal issues, external stressors, general health, my weight (think BMI). It really could be a whole host of things. Or compiling results from multiple factors. Is it from the food I eat? Is it due to when I eat. Is it because I suffer from malabsorption, among other things. Is my age a factor? So many facets to reflect upon. But every now and again I have such an amazing nights sleep, and there is no discernible difference in the days events, meals, or lead up to it that I can use to recreate that great nights sleep moving forward. Frustrating to say the least.

Doesn’t mean I can’t still hate getting up with an alarm. And I’m not even up all that early either. My 5:35am days are over, as far as I am concerned. I’ve acclimated to 7:00 am, and that feels early to me now. Though I will say this, I don’t experience the 2pm crash quite like I used too. But then I would also nap twice a day on my 2 hour long commute each way via train. So there is that to consider.

It is now Wednesday. Halfway through week two of being back to school. Starts to move quickly once you factor in all the extracurriculars, work, holidays, events, and such. Fair time, thanksgiving, Halloween, then the massive build up to Christmas with a couple of birthdays thrown in every which way along that time line, and POW! It will be 2024 before you even know it. Amazing how time flies. Add in some unfolding health issues from great grandma, and an unwell uncle at the farm, and time will begin to race past us.

I think we are planning on finishing up the Strawberry patch this morning. So another week of sore ham strings, and a nagging lower back to look forward to. The berries will look pretty good afterwards though. Take care out there. Ciao Bella!

Water softener vs Refrigerator: Which is worse?

The freezer has once again kicked off and frozen over at the vents making the fridge portion warm. And the Ecopure 30K grain water softener still shows Err03, and is absolutely pissing water out the drain pipe though the internal tank is not getting lower, as the water line is up to the bottom of the six. So a valve is stuck open somewhere (from what I can tell, but not being mechanically inclined that’s a guess, based on the volume of water going out the drain versus what little to no movement I can see inside the tank, which is what should be draining). So… yeah.

My daughters room fan ground to a halt on Sunday night, so I have been out to replace it. In June I pulled it apart myself, and used my air compressor to clean it all out, and then used lubricant to quiet down the fan, which lasted all of a month. So either the lube didn’t get to where it was needed most, or it needs white lithium grease inside the motor, as the squeal was metal on metal rubbing. Hard to mistake that pitch of squealing distress.but now that it is trash I’ll take any machine screws I can find out of the unit, and will toss the rest. I have the older busted air purifier to do that to aswell. Plus an old iron and a broken, burned out blender motor base. The screws, bolts and such are handy. The plastic and innards less so, for me atleast. Trying to only pack rat the vital pieces, and not collect a broken electronics graveyard.

So that’s my Tuesday as of 9:30am. We were going to go to the driving range today, but storms and appointments got in the way. My wife has an hour long chat with her doctor right now, and I have blood work to be drawn at 2:00pm. So not a travel to wander a mall day. If work remains quiet we may just watch a movie together and listen to the rain.

I do eventually need to check that the softner is actually doing something, or else I need to go reset it.

I know that all of my tomatoes plants will be glad for the rain today. I didn’t water them much at all during August. They are massive and sprawling plants now. But few blooms or actual tomatoes. Until recently. Now the four plants might produce more than we could eat in a years time. Funny how that is. Apple trees went berserk this year too. Same with the grapes and raspberries.  Likely same with the cherry tree, but the birds and local wildlife striped my tree bare before we had a chance to collect one single cherry. Not one! The blasted pests ate them all as they were on the verge of transitioning from greenish pink to red. BAM! The whole lot gone. The squirrels ravaged my raspberries too. The local hare ate my strawberries, even though the plants grow back each year they don’t produce much fruit.

Back to the pesky water softener. So far I have swapped out the wiring harness, the switch, the cam, and the motor itself. Besides the circuit board and physical unit, there isn’t anything left for me to replace, jiggle, tighten or manhandle on this infernal machine. Next step is to toss it to the curb along with the previous twenty year old model. And then buy a third one and have that installed – again. Not going through five bags of salt a month is nice. I think we’ve used four since May. Better!

Not sure about where all this excess moisture is coming from for the freezer though. The lines are empty. Water line disconnected. The ice cube maker disabled. There is no frost line near the seal to point to an external leak. But the vents are positively frosted over entirely. So I need to empty the freezer – again. Thaw out the vents – again. Move the milk downstairs, and any other items we want to keep. Very thankful for the ancient fridge in the basement which came with the house. Can save the milk, eggs and bacon. Just emptied the freezer downstairs so I can save a few other items aswell. Good to have!

Offending water softner stuck on Err03. Where is all that water coming from?
Frozen over vents after 30 minutes of thawing in the open air. Soon to be 2L puddle under the fridge.

So much for Tuesday. How many more bandaids can I apply to these appliances before we have to buy new ones! The struggle is real. Ciao Bella!
