Saturday mid day means Rock Climbing Session at The Hub Markham.

It’s quickly becoming one of the best parts of my week, and I look forward to it as soon as my forearms, and hands stop hurting from the strain. In other news the climbing is helping my weight loss. I’m now into the 195lb range, down from 213lbs, so that’s cool. I think that more climbing, and further weight loss will both be positive things at this point in my life. I definitely don’t forsee myself getting down to 175lbs by years end, but in another two pounds I’ll have dropped a full twenty this year, and that’s cool. I can be happy with that, sort of.

I have stuck with the auto belay climbing these last three sessions, but I want to give bouldering a go sometime soon. I think that when I go back on tuesday or wednesday I will try it then. I managed to climb more routes last week than ever before, so let us hold to that upward trajectory. Or try harder routes for a change. Or be willing to struggle on the really hard stuff a bit more before giving up for easier climbs. I could probably rest a bit more in between climbs, but I know how tired I’ll get, and I can always rest, or call it a day earlier and just wait for my kids to finish. It’s a toss up. I can go hard and rest towards the end, or rest inbetween and still be tired but get fewer climbs in. Either way the lactic acid is building up in my forearms/hands and will stop me from climbing. I say, go hard for as long as I can take it, then rest & stretch it out.

Bouldering section.
A nice climb to start my day.
A challenge which I managed to figure out.

I think that Santa Clause might bring us some chalk bags, chalk and an auto locking carabiner for the holidays this year. I for one hope that we continue to climb into the new year. It’s a lot of fun. Does make playing the guitar more difficult for 48/72 hours afterwards, but if I use or rely on my legs more, I can try to curb that pain a fair bit.

I don’t think I’m going to go whole hog on climbing, by making it my new identity or anything, but I am enjoying it for the moment. I have been looking at climbing tips on YouTube since I don’t currently have any climbing friends, just my kids whom are also novices, like myself. Though, they are receiving instruction, whereas I am not. I had the intro orientation, but no climbing talk, just safety stuff. Better than nothing.

I did buy us a twelve dollar bottle of liquid chalk because as my hands get progressively weaker, sweatier and more slick, I was hoping to regain some stick to it-ness via the chalk use. Works a bit, but when I have to stop climbing it’s because I can nolonger close my hand/thumb with any reliability. At least not if I want to hang any weight from that grip. So, I should have exhausted legs as well, but I rarely do, so that tells me I’m not using my legs enough. Improved form should help with that.

I went climbing for the first time at some place in Comox, with my oldest brother, and his kid. I think we all went as a family, prior to my having any children that is, so it was atleast ten years ago or longer. And I hated the auto belay system because you have to put full weight on it for it to kick in, and the whole time it felt like I could just fall off the wall and plummet forty feet to the ground.  So this time around I was ready for that sensation, and believed in it, and didn’t have the same panic when climbing. Good to know. It’s one thing to hear about it, and another to experience it, and be comfortable with it. The slight delay in the autobelay rope descent that is.

Still sorting out the shoes though. The size 13’s were more comfortable, but the squashed big toe is really unpleasant. In the new year I might invest in my own harness at least. They are sixty bucks. I can handle that. But the shoes are crazy. Well over that price, starting around $225.00 for men’s moderate, firm toes. Not there yet.  Not by a long shot.

I wonder if the parking situation is any better when they open during the week? It’s absolutely full when we get there on saturdays. Have to park at one of the surrounding buildings, or across the road at the Tim’s. Weather is getting mighty cold for parking that far away if you ask me.

Happy saturday morning, the last day of November 2024. Ciao Bella!

Winding down on a friday afternoon.

A good portion of my business contacts are in the US, so this week has been pretty quiet. I had one email late tuesday night, and one other email exchange yesterday. I would be surprised to have more than one today aswell. Not to mention today being Black Friday, a shopping spectacle for a lot of people, which means they aren’t in the office, or reviewing standing projects. No problem. I can handle a quiet friday with my puppy. I did think I was going to get a new report in today, but tomorrow afternoon works too. Or Monday, whichever works for those signing the cheques. I’m easy.

It is a rather chilly minus seven today. A particularly cold walk for the dog this morning. Boy am I glad the new vehicle has a remote starter, heated seats, and a warming steering wheel. It’s quite lovely. Very toasty! I’m hoping to not have much on the docket this weekend. Oh we will definitely go rock climbing, and make our hands, and forearms go numb. But beyond that, I’m not interested in seeing people, hosting, or interacting in any way, shape or form. I feel overly tired. Staying up too late watching Reacher with my wife. Solid show, but we don’t start it until 10pm, and if we do a double header I’m not into bed until nearly midnight. And I’m feeling exhausted because of it. Still, it’s a good show though. I appreciate the couch cuddle time with my wife though.

I spent the morning drawing up my months invoices, and sending those out. Truth be told I sent a couple yesterday, because two were requested asap. No problem! I’m expecting two, or three more reports before the new year starts, so I’ll have lots to do in December if things move along as planned. But I won’t get upset if one gets bumped to January instead. I’d prefer more work get done now, but having jobs lined up for the new year is not a bad thing. Takes some of the stress out of potential lull periods if I know I can break it up with one, or two paid gigs in the middle of it. Three individual three week lulls is better than one eleven week long down period if you ask me. Just means I can get a lot of cleaning done, and organize the house after the winter break with the kids home all day. I can indulge in longer dog walks, and take my time with lots of snow shoveling to keep the house free of ice jams, backed up eaves troughs, and potential flood threats. I treated myself to both a new metal shovel, and an industrial ice scraper for the driveway. I only pray we don’t have too many dumpings of snow that are over six inches in depth at one time. We had nearly 17 inches one time during the Covid lock down months, and that very nearly killed me. A run away heart beat made me tingle, not in a good way. It was too much. But we don’t get that kind of action every year so I haven’t spent the money on a snowblower just yet. With all of the bikes, benches, tables  and tools, I don’t have anywhere I can store something that large which won’t put it in everybody’s way 90% of the time. It’s a purchase I wrestle with constantly. Mainly for the bottom of the driveway where the town piles up a four foot tall wall of heavy, wet, partially melted ice after I’ve cleared my drive already. Followed by having to do the back patio because it wants to drain into the basement via the windows if I don’t.  I don’t want a thirty six incher, but a twenty four inch wide snowblower would fit through the back gate, I believe, and would cut down my back breaking labour by more than half. Would have to be an electric start, as I can’t be putting my shoulder out tugging on an icy cold pull start RIP cord. See, now I have conditions, and requirements on the purchase. Before you know it I’m buying handle warmers, a wind shield, automated blower direction changer for the stack, and chains for the tires, on and on.

We had the first very light dusting of snow last night, so the streets were brined, and the parking lots salted in anticipation of an impending storm. It’ll be December in one more day, so just about the right time for it. I guess it’s technically still the fall until the twenty first or something like that. But winter is on the cusp of making itself known.

Ok, enough from me. Hope you are all well. Take care out there. Ciao Bella!

When the Winter Tire Rims are nicer than anything you’ve ever had before…

And they aren’t even the standard nice rims that come with the vehicle’s summer tires either. Whoo boy! It’s a looker. Now to keep it clean, and record any/all maintenance done with it over the next decade. I’ll need to source the correct coolant, break fluid, engine oil, cabin & oil filters, transmission fluid, and extra bulbs for the lights. They gave us the appropriate socket for the lug nuts thankfully, so I’ll make a note of that. I’ll also need to note the make & model of the winter tires for storage retrieval purposes. Lots to stay on top of.

In other news I have a heated steering wheel now. Plus I don’t have to use my wife’s car if I want to listen to my own music anymore. Blue tooth connectivity! I also want to go pick up some air fresheners, and a small garbage bin/bag combo for the vehicle. I absolutely do not want the kids to treat it like a gods be damned toilet like they did the previous van, and my wife’s current SUV. So messy. My kids are slovenly. Just no respect for property at all. Just none. Food gets dropped, wrappers go everywhere, drink containers left to mould over once consumed. A mess. Yuck.

But, now we can travel to the cottage with space to breathe, and the dog has room to lie comfortably, and we have 4X the room for taking stuff up north with us. Mini Vans may not be sexy, or cool, but by god do they offer comfort, and space! I like it, I like it alot.

So now it is Thursday, which is US Thanksgiving. So there should be football on today. No NHL games, but plenty of pig skin. Which makes tomorrow Black Friday! The most terriblest shopping day of the year, next to Christmas Eve, and Boxing Week Sales, and New Year’s Eve clearance sales. It’s a whole thing. I’m waiting on one more Christmas present, and one additional birthday present to arrive, and I’m just about done. Yippee! Just about, but not entirely as they say.

Besides Planes, Trains and Automobiles I can’t seem to find any quality Thanksgiving themed movies that don’t belong to the Hallmark channel of extruded cheese. I want a real film, not low budget porn quality production value. SNL sometimes has a good compilation show from various years for specific holidays, but it’s not a consistent through line for a story. Also, not interested in Thanksgiving themed slasher flicks, as that’s not my cup of tea.

You know what I finally got around to watching the last couple of days, both Nope, and Alien Romulus. The Alien film I thoroughly enjoyed, the “horror” film Nope was a bit of a let down if you ask me. So much of it was too dark visually, I couldn’t see anything. Glad I had the sub titles on as they let me know what was supposed to be going on. It wasn’t bad, per se, but it felt like a long way around to nothing. Empty. I’m certain there was an animal cruelty element in there too, but that was more entertaining atleast. The stuff with the horse Lucky, and the Chimp Gordy. The chimp stuff could have been a very compelling movie of it’s own. Super eerie.

Happy US Thanksgiving to all whom observe. Ciao Bella!

Do we get the car now?

Things have not transpired as smoothly as one would wish when buying a new vehicle. Our pick-up date has moved three times, and the kids are getting restless for the new wheels. It had to wait longer than expected at a sealant place, then they had to wait for snow tires, then another bump for the rims for the snow tires, and a chance to swap them over onto the new van. I was supposed to go climbing today, but I guess I still could go with my wife’s car, but it’s not the same. Ha. Plus I had a late email with a time sensitive ask, so I need to stay on top of that right now.

Not only that but I need to clean out my wife’s car, as the girls have littered it with toys, and junk. Not to mention a fair amount of garbage. Needs to be vacuumed out, and wiped down pretty extensively. Maybe not as bad as the van, but it’s still kinda awful inside the back row of seats. My wife stores old Girl Guides activities loosely in the far back, trunk area, so that requires some seeing to aswell. Not an organized machine my girls. Not in any way, shape or form.

I’m having a hard time concentrating because our very loud dishwasher is going at the moment. Glad it’s halfway done by now. I turned it on before doing both drop off, and the dogs farm walk. I didn’t want to have to hear it for a full two hours from all four corners of our tiny house. But, on the bright side I’ll have dishes, and bowls to eat off of once again, and utensils to eat with! Yeah! Bonus.

Traffic was back to its regular self today, no massive line ups at all of the four way stops. Not sure if there was a road closure yesterday, or an accident on some major artery, but the increased traffic was madness. Glad it isn’t always like that around here. It was brutal. I do not miss commuting, traffic jams, and other people at all.

The bulk of our Christmas gifts arrived the other day, so I can begin to wrap them at my leisure. I was going to get some things myself, but I’ll just pass my wife some money so that she can buy what she needs, and actually get the right item. If we order it through School Cash the kids classes get a kick back as part of the fundraising efforts. Win-win. My wife gets the specific thing she wants, and the kids school gets some money from it too. Pencils, paper, and books for most of them!! Yeah buddy.

The plan is for my wife to finally grab the new vehicle later today. Which means I’m out playing chauffeur for the kids and all of the programming this evening. Well, probably not ALL of it, but let’s say atleast half. Will need to set an alarm to make sure I go get the youngest after dropping her off! Whoopsie daisy. Anyway, I need to go assemble some flat pieces into an isometric render of a retail display. Ciao Bella!

Getting on with it.

Looking forward to starting my day, it has been a slow moving morning. Lots of additional traffic on the tenth line for some reason. The trek to the farm which usually takes twelve minutes took nearly twenty five today. It was lined up at every single stop sign. Didn’t help that some fool was trying to make the jagged intersection at nineteenth into a four way stop, which it isn’t.  That was cool. I guess. Good way to get rear ended around these parts. I used my car horn for the first time in years while driving. Which was oddly satisfying, but I shan’t make a habit of it.

I have some paid work to go and dig into, so I won’t keep here long. Our walk at the farm was a wet, and drizzly one. I had to grab the van’s summer tires for the trade in happening either today, or later this week. Everything takes extra time, and more money, by the sound of it. I paid for the first 2/3 rds of my Christmas shopping Visa bill last night, and – Ouch! Aye carumba! That was hard on the old wallet. I have four folks left to cover off and I’m done, so that’s a silver lining atleast.

Enough waivering, I best get down to business. Take care out there. Ciao Bella!

A sweep, a vacuum, and a mop walk into a bar and…

I put them to good use cleaning my house. The end. Yup, you guessed it, a very special return to Domestic Duties Monday! Yay!! So what else is on the docket today? Laundry? Check. Dishes? Check. Kitchen counters, sink and stove top. Check, check, and fucken check! I suppose once all that is done, I could run the towels, and bathroom mats through the wash, since the dog has put muddy prints on every single thing in the house these last three very wet, and rainy days. Easy to forget just how dirty a dog will make your house. Shed hair, sloppy drinking habits from their bowl, kibble crumbs, and dirty paw prints. Add that to the whirlwind of chaos that are my two kids, and you have yourself a recipe for a seemingly never ending chores list. Pre puppy, I could leave the floors for two or three days, but now, it’s nearly every single day that they look awful.

I am training him to enjoy getting brushed, as I hope to limit the amount of bum fluff he deposits onto my floors by regularly combing that lighter stuff out of his coat. He’s new enough that 90% of the grime I cleaned from the car was from the girls, and not him. He’s still not too keen on having his nails done, but whatever. Small steps right?

I was thinking that I could put on a Christmas movie and wrap some stocking stuffers. But I think I’ll wait for the bigger stuff I ordered to show, and then I’ll wrap it all up, and get it done the first week of December. Try as I might, I can’t quite feel the Christmas spirit yet. American Thanksgiving hasn’t even happened! Nor the new emergent consumer holiday of Black Friday where things pretend to go on sale.

I’m nearly done my shopping list. I have a niece & nephew to deal with, my own parents, and last, but not least my wife needs to decide what she really wants. She mentioned some items off hand which I have picked up already, but I want to know what she actually, really, deep down, wants as a present.

For the moment the house smells of lemon scented soaps. I’m going to wash the appliances exteriors, the sink and stove. Through some laundry in, and wait for some work emails to filter in. Take care out there on this cool, sunny, Monday in late November 2024. Ciao Bella!

Retrieving decades old junk.

Many, many years ago, prior to getting married, I lived at the farm, in the basement. Where I put my very old computer to rest, in pieces, in the back of the furnace room. This was a computer I bought new, refurbished, with a whopping 256Mb of memory to it. Little more than a word processor for writing essays. If I had cables, power, a mouse, and could remember any sort of password for it, I’d bet I could read all of the horrendous papers I wrote while I was at Trent Univesity. Nothing spectacular to find. Well before bitcoin, and very early days yet for the internet. No short stories to be found, but likely a couple of poorly rendered logos from Microsoft Paint if you looked around. I don’t even know how, or if, I archived materials back then. I didn’t really come into my own with data storage, and file retrieval until I started doing graphic design, and then had to keep all of my project parts accessible, and organized for file transfers. My guess is I kept lots on the desk top, or all together on the C:/  and or D:/ drives. Flash drives weren’t really a thing then. But the smaller compact floppy discs were the go to for moving files around between computers. What a trip down analog memory lane that is.

Found some old weights I used to use to rehab my wrists from the early stages of my design career. A bucket, my old inkjet printer, and my brothers monitor which I inherited, and used to power my newly purchased McCheese PC. I think it still cost me around $400.00 or so on sale for Boxing Day, or New Years. Black Friday wasn’t really a thing here in Canada twenty or so years ago. We weren’t just the US of the north then. More so now than ever before though. TV, movies, and music have really saturated our market now.

Even found an empty 2-4 of Moosehead Light with the old packaging. I don’t recall reclining in the basement here with a beer, but the carton tells me otherwise. I remember smoking some bud out the basement door looking at the creek, watching the animals in the tree line. Now that I recall very clearly. I had no cable, and no satellite, no antenna either. Just VHS tapes for my VCR, an old brown over stuffed arm chair, and my trusty 27 inch Zenith CCTV. Smoke, eat, and watch one of my movie collection over, and over, and over again. I also used to paint a fair bit while I was at it too. I had my crappy mattress on an old pine futon frame (which I still have!, the frame anyway). I had bought an extra firm futon mattress, which was horrible, but proper bed frames, and the accociated mattresses were exorbitantly expensive, even for a single bed. The futon, and “firm” mattress were still more than a thousand bucks cheaper at the time. My back hated it, but it was all I could really afford to spend. Though, as I had no car I probably should have spent the money, as my back is not the greatest anymore. I can’t attribute that to the futon, but it didn’t help. That you can rest assured of.

So here we are, back to Sunday morning. Rock climbing was a total blast. I am booked in to be able to climb with the girls right through until Christmas, with the gear rentals included. Once we swap over the van I might try to go Wednesdays too. If I can manage it, going 3 times a week, twice alone, and once with the kids per week, I will really get my money’s worth. After which I may never want to go again, or I’ll wind up buying my own harness, shoes, and a chalk bag so that I can go whenever I please. But we will have to see about that. I need to drop several more pounds, as I’m still lifting the heaviest body I’ve ever had forty feet into the air up along these manufactilured walls, with teenie tiny narrow foot/hand holds. It’s really a pressure point on my feet, and finger tips while I currently weigh so much more than I need to.

The palm, forearm stretches go a long way towards resetting my hands, and arms. The only thing keeping me from climbing more right this second is the numb arm/hands combo I’ve got going on. If I can learn to do more lifting with my legs, I could save my arms a bit more. Also the death grip is numbing my fingers, and makes the tendons slow to react 24/48 hours afterwards. I’m still enjoying it all, and the kids definitely love it too. Even the youngest is enthusiastic about going, and next week puts us more than half way through. That’s big for my little one, she is notorious for getting bored really quickly, and acting up in a fit of bored rage. Not so with climbing. She is focused, excited, and doing something extremely physical. I love to see it.

So here I sit, at the farm with a van full of junk which I need to tear down, and figure out how to properly dispose of. I need to wait for a designated technology donation day, where they take our old tech, strip out the minerals, and bits they want, and trash the rest safely themselves. I’ll have to check the town website to see when that happens again. Take care out there. Ciao Bella!

More rock climbing at The Hub.

It was a hell of a work out last weekend, and today was no different. I tried out several more routes today, and only failed on two runs. I have picked up a thirty day pass so I can keep climbing with the kids until the end of December. I might even wind up going a few times during the week on my own to get a few more climbs under my harness.

All I know is, is that my arms are fried, and I want to have a long, meaningful nap. We were also up early today to go see dome friends kids play hockey at one of the nearby rinks. We made signs for my daughter’s friends and everything. But now I’m tired, and hungry, and more than a little sore. Good times!

175 Wet Wipes and it’s still grimy.

We are set to trade in our van when we pick up the new car this weekend so I have spent more than two hours cleaning it. First pass was to pull out all of the physical items, like toys, and garbage. Pens, pencils, crayons, beads, paper and beach items. Plus a whole lot more, just know that we kept the van well stocked with useless crap. Next I climbed into the van on my hands and knees and vacuumed every square inch that I could fit the nozzle. Inside the chairs, the stow and go bays, the trunk, and any side compartments we have. I let that sit for a few says, then went at it with the vacuum again. Today I took out the car seat, and the shopping bags, jumper cables, 407 transponder, and whatever was left behind from my kids since Tuesday/Wednesday cleaning sessions. Today I climbed aboard armed with various wet wipes, and a plastic bag. I nearly filled the bag with soiled wet wipes. Just black, brown, grey and all around nasty. My kids are grimy little toads. And it still isn’t  “clean”. Just less violently disgusting to the senses. So I’ve probably spent nearly 3 hours tidying it up, and I bet they junk it almost immediately. It requires an extensive detailing job, body work, and some type of wheel bearing or joint up in the front end.

Our old dog had hair like porcupine quills, and they are deeply, deeply embedded into the fabric, and textiles contained inside the van. Just a nightmare to remove. I could only do it by picking them one by one, and I gave that up real quick. I thought our fine toothed dog brush would work, but it did not! So – yeah. Unless they strip it for parts, I don’t see this van having much of a life beyond the 167,000 Km that we gave it. We also bought it second hand in 2015 with 60,000 Km on it already, so we didn’t go hog wild with it over the course of the ten or so years we had it. 107,000 Km in a decade is not a tonne of driving if you ask me. Once it stopped being our go to for cottage, or Ottawa runs it really stopped getting a lot of wear and tear on it. I used it to drop the kids off at school, grocery shop, and run the kids to programming, and various appointments. I n the last few years I didn’t want to drive more than 20-30 minutes away because it wasn’t as reliable as one would like from a family vehicle.

While this is the cleanest the van has been since early September when I did all this the last time, it isn’t exactly a show stopper. Still a bit embarrassing to put other people in it. The new puppy whom puts dirty paw prints on everything doesn’t help. I’d love to say that we’ll contain him once we get the new car, and that they kids will be less messy, I can promise neither of those things becoming a reality.

What I can promise is an air freshener in the new van from day two onwards, and a garbage bag/bin so that I don’t find juice box straw wrappers stuffed into the seats, and mouldy kleenex tucked down inside the cup holders. That sort of nonsense I can do without now that both kids are nolonger toddlers, or really small little kids. They know better than to do that now.

Anyway, this cold drizzle filled Friday is full of surprises. Last night my eldest child had a performance to fundraise for their new play. We are going to get to see a version of Newsies come late spring, early summer 2025. The kids all sounded good. I have high hopes for it.

Stockings stuffed for the Holidays.

Was grocery shopping and though Eh! What the hell, I’ll get my stocking stuffers now, and alleviate some Christmas time stress. And wouldn’t you know it, BAM! Including groceries it was over $400.00. That’s crazy talk. Scaling back for Christmas is proving difficult when shampoo bottles, and Conditioner are $8.00 or more, each! Yikes. So three shampoos, three conditioners, three chocolate M&M bags, two Terry’s chocolate oranges, lip chap, tooth brushes, tooth paste, two bubble baths, four adult tooth pastes, a 2 pack of deodorant, and one Axe body spray, plus some dog toys, and treats added more than $150.00 to my usual bill. Insanity.

Holy hell November is passing quickly. I just realized that today is the 21st! Even when we aren’t away on vacation for most of the month this November atleast is just whizzing by. Milust have been those two very busy weeks I had previously. I need to eat. Take care.
